Coins from Galaxidi area
The coins on display were found during excavations of local sites, such as the Heroon Square (Manousakia) which was excavated by Threpsiades, the ancient city within the peripheral wall on the hill where Agios Nikolaos is built today, and Pountes in Anemokambi, and generally from the area of Galaxidi.
Coins were identified as belonging to various periods from the 3rd c. B.C. to the 19th c. A.D., that is from the Archaic, Roman, Late Roman and Byzantine periods and from the time of Venetian Rule, Turkish Rule and of the New State of Greece.
The discovery of coins in an area indicates human activity and life. Therefore, because coins from a wide chronological span were found, it can be concluded that the area of Galaxidi was continuously inhabited.
