Shipwrecks
The flourishing maritime town was often devastated by the news of a shipwreck. Although the wooden vessels were well-constructed and stable and the sea-farers of Galaxidi were able and experienced, their only power was in the sails. Therefore, the ships were easily affected by bad weather. Also the means of navigation were not like those of today, especially for forecasting the weather and warning about reefs, straits, and locality of other ships in fog or bad weather.
Phrases written on some of the paintings describe the extent of the tragedy.
